The U.S. territory of Puerto Rico is not the largest island in the Caribbean, only about 3,515 square miles, but it has managed to squeeze in 18 eye teasing golf courses. Along with these courses, several luxury hotels and resorts have started cropping up on the island. Visit Puerto Rico is looking to cash in on mainland Americans planning to travel out of the cold this fall and winter with luxury golf vacations to beautiful resorts on a lush tropical island, all in the United States.

Puerto Rico is home to several of the most top-rated golf course designers in the Caribbean, Mexico, and Atlantic Islands, with most of them being located near the territory capital of San Juan. These courses are easily accessible from the only major airport on the island, that being Luis Muoz Marin International Airport (SJU). Puerto Rico offers a little of everything when you are not golfing, including the only rainforest maintained by the U.S. Forest Service.

The United States Golf Association welcomed the Puerto Rico Golf Association into the Allied Golf Association earlier in 2021. This inclusion makes them the 59th AGA and the first and only member outside of the 50 states. Some highlighted golf courses in Puerto Rico are:

Royal Isabela (18)- Possibly one of the most beautiful golf courses on Earth, The Links at Royal Isabela runs along stunning cliffs 200 feet above the Atlantic Ocean and drops to areas of natural sand dunes. The course is one with the island’s natural beauty with birds, and native foliage integrated into the course.

El Conquistador Resort (18)- This Arthur Hill designed course is located on the northeast coast of the island. The course itself has elevation changes of 200 feet. Lined with palm trees, with gorgeous views of the hills, you can’t find a better place to tee off on your next tropical getaway. The course has gorgeous rainforest and coastal views as you stroll to your next swing.

Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve (36)- Dorado Beach offers two stunning courses that are just as challenging as they are beautiful. The courses were designed to highlight the island’s natural beauty. The courses use sand native to the island and features perfectly placed manmade rivers. This course is the perfect challenge for any golf enthusiast looking for a challenge. The courses of course features great views of the ocean and perfect sunsets. The east course ranks as one of the world’s best.

Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Golf & Beach Resort (36)- This stunning two-course resort features luxury clubhouses with perfect views of both courses. These two courses were designed by the legendary Troon Golf. These courses overlook the Atlantic Ocean, Mameyes, and El Yungue rivers, with views from every hole. They also offer a world-class driving range.

Hilton Ponce Golf & Casino Resort (27)- This resort offers three different 9-hole courses. These courses have great views of the Central Mountains and the Caribbean Sea. A big plus for this course is the beachfront clubhouse.

Wyndham Palmas Beach & Golf Resort (36)- This two-course Golf resort is attached to the Wyndham Palmas hotel and resort. Flanked by trees and gorgeous water for an interesting challenge, this course is an island favorite.

Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve Puerto Rico (36)- These two courses are backdropped by the incredible El Yungue rainforest on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other side. This course is within easy access to the airport in San Juan. The course and resort were redone in December 2019 in a multi-million-dollar renovation.

The allure of taking a golf trip to Puerto Rico is pretty easy to understand as the resorts and hotels offer many amenities in their golf packages such as breakfast buffets and complimentary drinks. It is also an extremely easy trip to a tropical island for U.S. mainlanders as you don’t need a passport and the island obviously takes U.S. currency. While primarily Spanish-speaking, the island is bilingual.
