William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream gives us the phrase, “Though she be but little, she is fierce,” a fitting description for the BMW X1 M35i xDrive. As the smallest xDrive SUV in BMW’s lineup, this high-performance variant proves that size is no limitation. Equipped with the most powerful modular inline-four engine BMW has ever produced, the X1 M35i xDrive delivers an exhilarating driving experience that stands out in the compact SUV segment.

Although we test-drove the 2024 X1 M35i xDrive, the 2025 model remains virtually unchanged following its significant third-generation update. Under the hood, a potent 2.0-liter, four-cylinder M TwinPower Turbocharged engine delivers an impressive 312 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. This powertrain launches the SUV from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.2 seconds, with a top speed of 155 mph. BMW has refined this engine with advanced technology, including the Miller combustion cycle, redesigned intake ports and combustion chambers, and optimized camshaft timing—ensuring a seamless balance of power and efficiency.

Performance enhancements extend beyond the engine. The X1 M35i xDrive features M-specific chassis technology, including optional M Compound brakes—a first for an M Performance model. The BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system works in tandem with Adaptive M Suspension, providing a dynamic yet comfortable ride. Additionally, near-actuator wheel slip limitation ensures exceptional agility and traction, instilling confidence behind the wheel.

The X1 M35i xDrive makes its performance-oriented intentions clear with an aggressive exterior design. Signature M styling cues include the M kidney grille with vertical double bars, black M mirror caps, and quad exhaust tailpipes. A striking front apron with large air intakes and a sporty rear diffuser further emphasize its athletic character.

Inside, the cabin balances sportiness with sophistication. An Alcantara-trimmed instrument panel, Aluminum Hexacube Dark interior trim, and an M leather steering wheel set the tone for a premium driving experience. The optional M Sport seats, adorned with illuminated M logos, offer both comfort and support. Practicality is also a priority, with a 40:20:40 split rear seat configuration and up to 46.9 cubic feet of cargo space.

The X1 M35i xDrive is the first BMW model to debut the latest iDrive system with QuickSelect and BMW Operating System 9. The updated interface features a redesigned home screen, improved menu structure, and seamless access to digital services. The BMW Curved Display and BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant further enhance usability, creating an intuitive and connected driving experience.

Both the 2025 and 2024 BMW X1 come well-equipped with premium features designed for comfort and convenience, including a 10.7-inch infotainment system, a digital instrument panel, forward collision mitigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, navigation, blind-spot monitoring, and parking sensors. The M35i xDrive premium package (MSRP $58,795) in our test vehicle adds a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, a wireless charging pad, and sport seats for an even more immersive driving experience.

Compact yet commanding, the BMW X1 continues to demonstrate that big things can indeed come in small packages, solidifying its position as a standout in the premium compact SUV market.
