This wasn’t because it made life “easier” (since a G-Class has never been about subtlety), but because it made everyday life feel elevated, as if the week itself had been upgraded.
My test vehicle arrived in Sun Yellow (non-metallic), a color that turns the famously upright Geländewagen silhouette into something closer to a rolling exclamation point. In a world filled with grayscale luxury SUVs, the yellow G doesn’t blend in; it announces its presence. Priced at $161,500 as tested, it certainly should.

Yet the most telling indicator of the electric G-Wagen’s impact wasn’t how adults stared at it at stoplights; it was how kids reacted. Within minutes, my two young passengers decided this wasn’t just an SUV, it was a character.
“Is it really electric?”

“Where does the sound come from if there’s no engine?”
They weren’t wrong to be confused. The G-Class is one of the last vehicles that should work as an EV on paper: tall, flat-sided, and unapologetically old-school in design. Yet, that’s exactly why the G 580 EQ is successful. Mercedes didn’t dilute the icon into a tech appliance. Instead, it preserved the G-Class DNA and electrified the legend underneath.

The headline engineering achievement is bold: four independently controlled electric motors (one near each wheel) producing a combined 579 horsepower and 859 lb-ft of torque. This layout isn’t just about speed, though a 0–60 mph time of 4.6 seconds is impressive; it’s about control, especially in challenging traction conditions.
In everyday driving, that control translates to composure. The G 580 EQ feels remarkably stable for such a tall, squared-off vehicle, with immediate power delivery characteristic of EVs. There is no gear hunting and no lag, just instant torque on demand. The kids noticed the silence first, then they recognized the absence of vibration. Eventually, they wanted acceleration demonstrations, because the most exciting part of instant torque is watching passengers grasp its meaning in real time.

Mercedes understands that a G-Wagen is emotional transportation, so it didn’t abandon sound. The G-ROAR sound experience creates a deep, bassy, G-Class-inspired presence that shifts according to the drive mode. For kids, it’s magical: a vehicle that “sounds powerful” while still being electric. For adults, it’s a clever reminder that EVs don’t have to feel sterile.
Additionally, there are practical features that make the electric G feel purpose-built, not retrofitted. The rear-mounted spare tire area becomes a rear “Design Box,” a convenient storage space perfectly sized for a charging cable, tools, or winter gear. In November, that’s particularly important. This is the season for surprise rain, early darkness, and last-minute road trips.

The G-Class has built its reputation off-road, so Mercedes needed to ensure capabilities were top-notch. The G 580 EQ maintains its robust ladder-frame roots while integrating a 116-kWh battery into the frame for a low center of gravity. The specs are impressive: the electric G can climb a 100% grade, handle 35 degrees of lateral stability, and ford water up to 33.5 inches.
Then come the unique EV features. G-TURN allows the vehicle to rotate in place on loose surfaces, while G-STEERING tightens the turning radius off-road in ways that feel almost surreal the first time you try them. It’s one thing to be capable; it’s another to be both capable and entertaining.
Inside, the digital off-road experience is surprisingly intuitive. The OFFROAD COCKPIT displays trail-critical data, such as compass, pitch, roll, steering angle, and torque, right where you need it. The “Transparent Hood” feature uses cameras to create a virtual view beneath the front of the vehicle. This is a dream for anyone who has carefully inched toward an obstacle, wishing they could see through the sheet metal.

Range, Charging, and Real-World Holiday Life
The EPA-estimated range is around 239 miles, making it more suitable as a “premium lifestyle EV” than a cross-country cruiser. However, fast charging does help. The G 580 EQ supports DC fast charging up to 200 kW, allowing for a charge from 10% to 80% in about 32 minutes under ideal conditions. For holiday driving—including shopping runs, family visits, and school events—that’s a workable rhythm, especially with route planning integrated into the Navigation with Electric Intelligence.
