“Marking 20 years of luxury in the heart of the Costa del Golf, Finca Cortesin remains a timeless sanctuary for those who find paradise between the sea and the green.”
As you drive along the Autovía A-7 highway on a sunny day, admiring the Mediterranean Sea in southern Spain, you will undoubtedly see signs that read “Costa del Sol,” with the phrase “Costa del Golf” just beneath. This is fitting, as there are over 70 golf courses in the area. The Andalusian region—which stretches across approximately 90 miles of coastline known for its sunshine, beaches, and resort towns like Marbella, Torremolinos, and Málaga—is truly a year-round golfer’s paradise.
One of the best places to experience this is the Finca Cortesin Resort. While 2026 marks its 20th anniversary, each day at the resort feels like a celebration. Its lush grounds, gardens, and views of the mountains and the Mediterranean create a tranquil and spacious atmosphere, perfect for relaxation. Guests can also easily access a wide variety of outdoor activities such as tennis, sailing, fishing, kitesurfing, windsurfing, swimming, horseback riding, trekking, and mountain biking, with skiing available in the Sierra Nevada during winter.

The resort features multiple pools (including an adults-only pool), a private beach club, a fitness center, and an award-winning spa. Every aspect of its extensive services—from dining to spa treatments, sightseeing, and golf activities—is marked by attentive service.
The par-72 championship golf course, measuring 7,482 yards from the back tees, has hosted the Volvo World Match Play Championship three times and the Solheim Cup in 2023. Designed by Cabell B. Robinson, the course is beautifully landscaped by Gerald Huggan, integrating the natural characteristics of the area.
However, this course is not simply for power hitters. According to Jose Olea, the resort’s Director of Golf, “This is definitely a strategic golf course. There are holes that dogleg right, others that dogleg left, with wide and tight fairways, uphill and downhill lies, as well as blind shots. It will challenge golfers of all abilities.”

With over 100 bunkers, winds that blow from both directions—from the mountains and the sea—and a rainy season, Olea offers insight into how to thrive on this year-round course. “Patience is a virtue here,” he advises. “It is not a course where you should feel compelled to go for everything.”
Like many premier venues, achieving a lower score often comes down to putting. “Although our greens are not significantly undulating, you need to putt well. They have a consistent slope gradient of 2–3%,” noted Olea. “When you combine that with Bermuda grass, they can become very slick. They are not the easiest greens to read and require a lot of attention, or you risk three-putting.”

With a region so rich in golf, you will want to explore other nearby courses during your stay. Among the very best are:
- Real Club Valderrama: Host of the 1997 Ryder Cup led by Severiano Ballesteros, this iconic Robert Trent Jones Sr. design is renowned for its fast greens, spectacular fringes, and false fronts.
- Real Club de Golf Sotogrande: Regarded by Robert Trent Jones as one of his five favorites among more than 500 designs worldwide, this 7,591-yard course is beautifully integrated into the local environment.
- San Roque Golf & Resort: Designed by Perry Dye in collaboration with Seve Ballesteros, this course has hosted the 2006 Spanish Open and several European Tour Qualifying School Finals.
After an exhilarating day on the course, Miriam Navarro Diaz, Spa Manager at Finca Cortesin, recommends targeted recovery. “We primarily suggest sports therapeutic massage to target muscle groups most utilized in golf, including the back, shoulders, arms, hips, and legs,” explains Diaz. She adds, “Thai massage serves as an excellent complement, incorporating assisted stretching and joint mobilization to enhance flexibility and range of motion.”

A Symphony of Flavors: From Tokyo to the Mediterranean
After rejuvenating, guests can enjoy REI, the hotel’s signature restaurant. Master Chef Luis Olarra prepares exquisite dishes that harmonize traditional Asian techniques with Mediterranean influences. Guests can watch the preparation of signature plates using high-quality seafood and ingredients sourced directly from the resort’s organic gardens.
The Chef’s Recommendations feature a selection of exquisite starters and entrées. Begin your meal with the Oysters, served with a bright ponzu sauce and Osetra caviar. For the main course, enjoy the Unadon, featuring smoked eel over shinju mai rice and tare, or savor the Wagyu, a grilled sirloin served with gremolata sauce, ponzu sauce, and Japanese mustard.

Another fantastic option is El Jardín de Lutz, where Chef Lutz Bösing deftly merges classic Spanish recipes with modern culinary concepts. From the terrace, diners enjoy a front-row seat to the Mediterranean, framed by the silvery leaves of ancient olive trees. For a memorable experience, consider the green bean salad with grilled duck foie gras followed by the beef sirloin steak with black pepper sauce.
The location is a major highlight. Just down the road lies Estepona, offering a charming cultural experience with its narrow cobblestone streets. Additionally, ferry day trips are available to the Rock of Gibraltar and Tangier in North Africa.
Stylish and distinctive, Finca Cortesin provides a world-class experience in one of the most tranquil locales along the Andalusian coast. While it is an indulgence, it is an adventure that immerses you in the soul of Spanish culture and some of the finest golf in the world.
